More opinions on London Olympics Security

By Maureen Aylward

With security tight in London for the Olympics, we wanted to get an idea of potential security issues that could come up during the games. Our Zintro experts responded.

Rahul Bhonsle, an expert in security risk assessment, says that one of the most significant security issues in London is likely to be that of insider threats particularly due to the delay in mustering private security personnel. “One has to ask how due diligence in selections been has been carried out. This is not clear and may result in recalcitrant elements entering the system. Another related challenge is preparing the security personnel for the assigned task including soldiers who are no doubt extremely competent in their sphere, but the Olympics security in an international environment is a unique task which requires some special screening,” Bhonsle explains. “Security technology will be the key driver to early warning and proactive action in London. The ability to sift through millions of tons of personnel data and extracting intelligence out of it to anticipate threats is hopefully the key focus. Most of the time I find that a focus on technology is post incident and I hope in London it has been garnered for preemptive advantage.”

Dave Hook, an expert in airport security, says that despite all the efforts made for human safety and asset protection, there are always two problems nipping at a security planner’s heels: unanticipated tactics and unintended consequences. “Like defining the state of an atom in quantum physics, the more you try to pin them down, the less likely you are to see where they are going,” he says. “And the more you try to see where they are going, the less certain you are as to where they are at any given time. The challenge is accepting the right level of perspective so that you have a good enough idea of where they are and a good enough idea of where they are headed. That is the challenge for the security planner, despite having even the most state-of-the-art security system in place.
The most dangerous state for security is not knowing what comes next.”

“Zintro allowed us to communicate and connect” – Reece Eaton

Reece Eaton is an expert in the UK new media industry with an emphasis on operations related to advertising serving and online advertising products. He builds online ad networks and has trafficked large pan euro campaigns to publisher websites. He has also dealt with online ad inventory, pricing, and reporting for major international publishers.

He received an inquiry from the Zintro system from a potential client who was looking for an expert for marketing/social media/PR programming. The client was a small privately held company that was launching a new service in the health and wellness field and was looking to tie in social media. The company turned to Zintro to look for an adviser to help them decide what type of social media was the best fit and provide ongoing overview advice to help them stay on track moving forward.

“It was an excellent opportunity to work directly with a business to improve its ROI on ad spends. The client was in New Zealand and I am in the UK. We had a phone discussion about the project. It looks like we are going to continue to work together on it,” says Eaton. “Zintro allowed us to communicate and connect. How else would I be able to match my expertise to an individual’s requirements on the other side of the world? I receive inquires every week that are matched closely to my expertise. And the payment process is easy and speedy.”

Opinions on London Olympics Security

By Maureen Aylward

With security tight in London for the Olympics, we wanted to get an idea of potential security issues that could come up during the games. Our Zintro experts responded.

John Nobrega, an expert in corporate security in London, says that apart from the transportation and logistical issues of getting the security officers and their equipment deployed during the Games, the main areas of concern for the security industry regarding the forthcoming Olympic are, first and most significantly, a terrorist attack. “Although there has been no information to suggest any specific attack is likely to take place, the terrorist threat level in the United Kingdom remains at ‘Substantial’ which means an attack is a strong possibility by either a terrorist group or an individual. It is essential that security personnel are trained in identifying and reporting hostile reconnaissance and reporting suspicious behavior,” Nobrega says.

“The threat of domestic extremism such as protests, mass infiltrations of properties or Olympic venues is significant and security staff should be checking to see which groups are planning any type of direct action linked to the Games, its sponsors or other external groups,” Norbrega explains. “Liaison with the security and law enforcement community is essential. Information sharing mechanisms such as Cross-sector Safety and Security Communications has filled a vital link between businesses and the Police. Social networks also play a big part in today’s technological driven world and some of the most up to date information is available on platforms such as twitter and Facebook way before the main news channels.”

Jeff Bardin, an expert in cyber security, says that London security technology is some of the most extensive in the world. “London for years has used video cameras to monitor streets. This has been expanded significantly to cover new areas of potential interest. These cameras run across IP networks. Any disruption in power in London, which will be using enormous amounts of power relative to the new sites, attendees, participants, additional security, could lead to outages in video and other security apparatus,” Bardin points out. “An attack on the power grid, key points within the power grid, or key targets for certain areas could lead to outages that could cause localized ‘blindness’ for authorities. Diverse and redundant routes for power need to be in place to ensure continuity of the video operations. Surveillance should be continuous around physical power access points, power grids and transfer stations.”

Zintro experts discuss London Olympics Security

By Maureen Aylward

With security tight in London for the Olympics, we wanted to get an idea of potential security issues that could come up during the games. Our Zintro experts responded.

Tony Ridley, an expert in travel security, says that the Olympics is a lightning rod for numerous interested parties ranging from sponsors to criminal gangs and terrorists. “Given the concentration of visitors and commercial opportunities, all groups seek to exploit the event to their own ends,” says Ridley. “Security around the event therefore needs to be consistent and effective to keep crimes of opportunity, such as pickpocketing and ticket scalping, to a minimum. This same security mechanism must also detect, deter and react to more critical incidents such as fire, terrorist attacks and even natural disasters.”

One of the biggest problems with the Olympics security arrangement Ridley says, is that many of the organizers simply template their plans. “They may think they have found the perfect solution and may simply run the same plan and requirements, regardless of the location or local environment. Few discover this failure until it is too late or it becomes an expensive adjustment,” he says.

Technology has great versatility and application during the Olympics but it still needs to be monitored and maintained by people and agencies. Ridley cautions. “This is a skill and demand that can be overlooked. Many sponsors and event organizers will be leveraging technology but little of this will be integrated with the security systems, therefore leading to duplication or wastage. Technology may range from ticket validation, SMS alerts, local information applications, information videos to facial recognition,” he says.

Don Heitzman, a physical security analyst, says that managing security at an event like the Olympics is one of the unsung monumental feats of our times. “There are different aspects to consider, one of them transportation security. Sports teams travel together, usually on a bus that takes the team collectively from their hotel to the arena. Now consider hundreds of sports teams traveling to and from a residence or hotel or the Olympic Village at different times during a two week period. Those who would cheer them on and those who would do them harm could be present,” he says. “At the same time, there are high level politicians and heads of state that are attending, all of whom have different standards and protocols for personal security.”

Heitzman says that the process of credentialing is a security issue. “Thousands of people need some level of access to Olympic venues: athletes and their doctors, trainers and coaches, families and guests, VIPs and heads of state, all the way down to facility and maintenance crews. All these people must be categorized and credentialed. Even fans are credentialed,” he says.

Lastly, Heitzman says that the most impressive segment of security at an event like the Olympics is that it will all happen behind the scenes and under the radar. “Security professionals, police and fire officials, safety teams, and terrorism experts from around the world will cooperate in this effort to make it an exciting sporting event rather than an overt security exercise,” he says.

Saving Money on Marketing Research by Bob-Kaden

Guest post by Zintro user Bob-Kaden

You decide to conduct a research study. With objectives clearly defined you contact three research suppliers to get competitive quotes. All three come back with roughly the same approach to conducting the research. And all three quotes make you choke.

You might think your only choices are to pay the going rate, lower your cost by compromising on the quality of the research or forgetting about the research altogether.

But assuming you are intent on conducting the research as planned, the good news is you can save money by either taking a more active role in completing the research or by negotiating with research suppliers. Here’s how!

Understanding Supplier Pricing

In general, there are two types of research companies. There are full-service research suppliers that provide research planning services, project execution and control and analytical services. And there are field-service suppliers whose primary function is to provide the actual data needed to address the research objectives.

Full-service suppliers will give project specifications to a number of field-services. This includes the type of study they wish to conduct, the anticipated length of the questionnaire, the profile and number of respondents they wish interviewed and the manner in which they want to collect data.

Field-services, in turn, price their data collection services to their full-service supplier clients, who then mark up those services when quoting their price to you. If you become the direct client of the field-service supplier, you will save this markup.

Obesity epidemic in the US: Lifestyle changes needed

By Maureen Aylward

One third of Americans are overweight and nearly a third of people under 20 are obese. We asked our Zintro experts to discuss the current leading ideas, approaches, or policies that are being developed to address the obesity epidemic in the US.
Mangesius, an expert in systems biology, says that the world has an over-nutrition problem, and the root cause of the obesity problem is that the supply of food has evolved faster than our bodies’ ability to process the excess food intake. “Glucose is the fuel of life, and glucose metabolism evolved over hundreds of millions of years, but humans have evolved over an infinitesimally shorter time period,” he says. “The human mind, always seeking more efficient solutions, found new ways to satisfy the body’s nutritional needs, and the result is an exponential increase in food choices and a matching decrease in physical activity.”

Mangesius says that everything we eat or drink that contains nutrients will sooner or later send glucose into the blood (compartment), and the blood will take glucose to each and every cell (which can be thought of as a bunch of other compartments). “Like everything else in the body, the amount of glucose in the blood is tightly regulated, not only day by day, but second by second; that is to say, any excess glucose produced by processing the food we eat in the digestive system must be stored,” he says. “Carbohydrates currently dominate human nutrition and most engineered foods contain refined sugars which, unfortunately in terms of their dynamics of turning into glucose, provide the fastest glucose bio-availability and thus are the leading cause of excess.”

The body is a 24/7, complex appliance that needs less power than a laptop, says Mangesius, yet is unbelievably efficient: it keeps the body moving, brain thinking, heart pumping five liters of blood, the temperature is maintained, food is processed and digested, and so on. “Because it is so amazingly efficient, your body only has a very limited ability to consume the excess energy: one can easily consume a meal that is much larger than the body needs, but one simply cannot do enough physical exercise to restore the balance within a reasonable time interval afterwards,” he explains. “When too much energy is available from food, but too little energy is consumed through physical activity, the body stores the difference as fat at every step of the metabolic processes. These excess fat deposits have led to the current world-wide epidemic of obesity, pre-diabetes, and type 2 diabetes, plus the huge increases in the incidence of type 1 diabetes. The long term cure must find its foundation in a different approach to nutrition.”

Eileen Enright, a holistic health coach, says that the ultimate approach is not to dwell on calories, carbs, fats, and proteins or create lists of restrictions or good and bad foods; instead, it is to foster the belief that nutrition can create a happy, healthy life in a way that is flexible, fun and rewarding. “I work with clients to reach their health goals in areas such as achieving optimal weight, reducing food cravings, increasing sleep, and maximizing energy. As we work together, clients grasp a deeper understanding of the food and lifestyle choices that work best for them and implement lasting changes that will improve their energy, balance and health,” she says. “It’s easy to overlook all of the things that contribute to our sense of nourishment and fulfillment. It’s not just the food we eat, but all of the other factors present in our daily lives: healthy relationships, a fulfilling career, regular physical activity, and a spiritual awareness. All of these factors are essential forms of nourishment, and when these “primary foods” are balanced, what you eat becomes secondary.”
